Depth, heat and layers

Epoxy cures by an exothermic reaction, and a thick mass holds its own heat: pour a tabletop resin two inches deep and it can yellow, crack or boil. Tabletop and art resins are rated for 1/8 to 1/4 inch per layer; deep-pour resins for 1 to 2 inches, sometimes more, because they cure slowly. The calculator gives the total volume; divide it into layers of the depth your resin allows, and let each reach a tacky set before the next. Warm the bottles to about 75°F before mixing so the parts flow and measure evenly, mix for three minutes scraping the sides, then pour.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much resin do I need for a flood coat?

Area in square inches times 0.125 inches, times 16.39 to get millilitres, or times 0.554 to get fluid ounces. A 24 × 36 inch tabletop is 864 square inches, so a 1/8-inch flood coat is 108 cubic inches, about 60 fluid ounces of mixed resin, or 66 with 10% for waste. That is a 1:1 kit of 33 oz of each part; buy the gallon kit or two 32 oz kits.

How do I calculate resin for a river table or a mold?

The same way, with the real depth: length × width of the channel × depth. A 4 × 40 inch river 1.5 inches deep is 240 cubic inches, about 133 fl oz. Deep pours need a deep-pour resin that cures slowly enough to shed heat; most tabletop resins are limited to 1/4 inch per layer, so check the label and pour in layers if needed.

How much does resin weigh?

About 1.1 grams per millilitre, a little heavier than water, so 1 litre of mixed resin is roughly 1.1 kg and 32 fl oz is about 1,040 g. The calculator gives grams for resins that are mixed by weight; use the ratio printed on the label, since a 1:1 by volume system is not 1:1 by weight.

Why add extra?

Resin clings to the mixing cup and stir stick, and a flood coat runs over the edges. Ten percent covers a normal pour; use 15% for a first attempt or a piece with many edges, and 5% for a mold with a lid. Running out mid-pour means a visible seam.

What is a seal coat?

A thin first layer, about 1/16 inch, brushed on porous surfaces like wood so the flood coat does not bubble as air escapes. The calculator's 1/16 option sizes it; let it tack up before the flood coat.
